Desperté, con ganas de sonreirle a la vida.
I woke up wanting to smile at life.

Hey there, my name is Ana. I am a designer, amateur coder, morning person, enthusiastic, and a proud Latina. I was born in the beautiful country known as "Eterna Primavera" or Guatemala. I have lived in the United States for over 14 years.

At the moment I am looking forward to graduating in 2018 with a Bachelor of Fine Art in Graphic Design with an Art History minor from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

My artwork is inspired by various aspects of the world around me. Everything is outstanding and has capabilities to change one's own perspective. I enjoy collaborating with different parties and work to accomplish a single goal. The unique experiences, stories, ideas brought to the table make each project distinct.

There are three objectives in the work that I create; believe, belong, and beyond. Believe, the world seems to have a priority to put each other down. Everything is either "right" or "wrong". This is not the case for me.
I strive to develop work that I believe to be genuine and has the capabilities to stand in this world. Belong, being the first-generation here in the United States I struggled to find a home.  Through time I have realized that home is made up of the various people around me. Since my art is made up of my experiences and stories, it too, did not fit in this culture. I have learned to take the culture and blend it with my own. Beyond,  I have gone outside the physical boundaries others have set for me. For that reason, I believe that limits do not exist except in one's own mind. My art, as well, is not bound to any rules and is free to express itself,  just as I am free to be my true self.

As part of our existence on this planet I am convinced we have an obligation to pursue social justice. It's the work that comes from the soul to fight for a world free of oppression, discrimination, and racism, because rights and opportunities shouldn't be fought for but given.

I aspire to travel and explore cultures, languages, traditions, etc. in Europe. It's so intriguing for me to find our roots and analyze where we are. We all come from different places which seem so distant from where we currently are.

Some of my least known qualities or thoughts is my enthusiasm for organized flailing, Coco Krispies and pizza is life, Tom Hiddleston is the human embodiment of sunshine, and genuine honesty is the way to any relationship.

I'm always fascinated to put my skills to work and collaborate with others. If you are interested please don't hesitate to contact me by email b3len@comcast.net or click the email button at the bottom of this page. Thank you!

Artist' Statement

SOFA CONNECT [a group collaboration] show at The Sculpture Objects Functional Art and Design (SOFA) Fair in Chicago - November 3 - 6, 2016

Oasis - Seating, lighting, and object installation

Our idea originates from the Japanese or "dry landscape" gardens also known as zen gardens. In Japan these environments require careful composition of rocks, gravel, water, and trees. The gardeners interacting with the garden can customize their own atmosphere by ranking the surface. The idea behind this it to imitate the ripples in water which open a doorway to a state of contemplation, mediation, or reflection. This is the exact ambiance we want for our exhibition to contrast the rushed atmosphere of SOFA.

Documenting Inequality [group exhibition] show at The Krannert Art Museum and Kinkead Pavilion - April 14 - 23, 2016

Un/documented - Documentary

At first glance you can’t tell I was born in Guatemala, or that I migrated here at the age of 6, or have parents who work 4 jobs. I’ve lived in this country for 14 years and have seen how people without documents have fought for their rights. I always admired how these individuals possessed the courage to organize and fight for their dreams. Now it’s my turn, I want to tell my story in hopes of having others learn that living in this country without papers doesn’t define who I am or what I do. When society opens its mind to other people’s stories we reclaim a form of peace and unity.

Onward and forward,
An Undocumented and Unafraid Student
